Norway plans to build The Rogfast, the world's longest and deepest road tunnel, for $46 billion (£36 billion).
This massive construction will connect Randaberg and Bokn in Rogaland county at 1,300 feet underwater and span 16 miles by 2033. This engineering marvel aims to make Norway's southern-northern commutes easier.
Ferries are the only way between Randaberg and Bokn. The Rogfast tunnel will replace the ferry route on the E39 coastal highway with an underwater roadway, halving travel time across Norway.
Currently, the 680-mile E39 between Kristiansand and Trondheim takes 21 hours. The new tunnel will cut this distance by 30 miles and save 11 hours by eliminating ferry crossings.
The tunnel is expected to carry 6,000 vehicles daily, making commutes to Stavanger and Bergen easier. The Rogfast will be the longest and deepest undersea passage, but it will only take 35 minutes to traverse.
The world's longest underwater road is Norway's Laerdal tunnel. The 15-mile route connects Lørdal and Aurland in Vestland county, offering a ferry-free route between Oslo and Bergen.
Visit Norway guides and experts recommend this trip. Site tourism officials said: "Explore the mountain inside and out! Visit the 800-year-old Borgund Stave Church in Lærdal, a popular destination for visitors and photographers.
