The most and least stolen cars of 2023 Way.com developed a list of the most (and least) stolen automobiles in 2023 using 2020-2022 data from the Highway Loss Data Institute of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The most stolen automobiles in 2023 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and HEMI are the most stolen 2020-22 models. Dodge Chargers again lead the pack. HLDI's newest whole-vehicle theft study found Charger SRT Hellcat theft claims were substantially higher above the 2020-22 average.
Charger SRT Hellcat theft allegations exceeded its road presence by 60 times. Charger HEMI theft allegations were 20 times greater than usual.
Charger and Challenger models with powerful engines have been among the top five most stolen since 2011. However, theft allegations for these models have increased dramatically during the last three years. Four Kia models are now in the top 20 thanks to a viral trend.
Charger SRT Hellcat cars had 25 theft claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years in 2020-22. This is up from 18 theft accusations for 2019-21 models. For comparison, the Infiniti Q60, the most stolen model from 2017 to 2019, had only two thefts per 1,000 insured vehicle years.
Complete vehicle theft losses by type From 2020 to 2022, passenger car whole vehicle theft claims were 0.41 per 1,000 insured vehicle years. The average vehicle theft claim cost $45,068. Average insured vehicle year losses, or overall losses, were $18.
The highest rate of whole vehicle theft claims was 0.55 for passenger automobiles. However, pickups had the greatest average claim severity of $61,071 and overall losses of $29.
EVs and medium SUVs dominated the least stolen autos list. The IIHS says EVs are less likely to be stolen. This may be because EVs are charged in well-lit, secure settings. The Tesla Model 3 with two motors experienced the fewest whole vehicle thefts, according to claims. Second was the Tesla Model Y.
Tesla Model 3 (single-motor), Model S, Model X, and Nissan Leaf are among the 20 least-stolen automobiles for 2020–2022. Six GM automobiles were used.
If low EV theft persists, future Dodge owners may be safer. Electric muscle cars will replace gasoline Chargers and Challengers. Charger Daytona SRT concept previews upcoming vehicle.
