Davante Adams, a wide receiver for the New York Jets, is aware that his reunion with quarterback Aaron Rodgers is unlikely to last long.
In Week 14, the Jets (3-10) lost to the Miami Dolphins 32-26 in overtime, thereby eliminating them from the playoffs. Given how poorly it has performed this season, New York might soon put an end to the Rodgers experiment.
Regarding Rodgers' possible departure, Adams stated on Tuesday's "Up & Adams" that "I mean, it'll be a sad thing for sure, but hopefully that's not the case."
"For that reason, we must maximize the ones we have here. Our performance in the previous game was respectable—I say respectable because it fell short of our ideal of excellence—but it was unquestionably a positive step.
Rodgers completed 27 of 39 passes for 339 yards and one touchdown against Miami. Adams, on the other hand, caught nine passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. Those performances, though, might be anomalies.
Rodgers, 41, has completed a poor 63.1% of his passes for 2,966 yards and 20 touchdowns and has thrown eight interceptions in his first 13 starts.
Adams has 40 receptions for 453 yards and three touchdown catches in seven games with the Jets since the Las Vegas Raiders traded him to them on October 15. In six of his seven games in New York, he has fallen short of 100 receiving yards.
According to Spotrac, the Jets would have to pay $14 million in dead cap in 2025 and $35 million in 2026 if they released Rodgers with a designation after June 1. Expect the quarterback to be cut by New York despite the cap charges.
Additionally, Adams' future with the Jets is unclear. In 2025, the 31-year-old's cap hit will be the highest on the team ($38.3M). You can count on him to play somewhere else if he doesn't agree to restructure his contract.
The Jets believed they would be a Super Bowl contender when they brought back the former Green Bay Packers tandem. Rather, it has been disappointing.
