On Tuesday, three-time Pro Bowl running back Ezekiel Elliott will join the playoff-bound Los Angeles Chargers' practice squad a week after being released by the Dallas Cowboys.
Jerry Jones said he released the 29-year-old "out of respect and appreciation" to "provide him with an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation." Elliott moved to Los Angeles because of that gesture.
Elliott has had his worst season, running for 226 yards on 3.1 yards per carry and three touchdowns. If added to the Chargers playoff roster, he would backup J.K. Dobbins.
Backup Gus Edwards hasn't played since December 19 due to an ankle injury, and his postseason status is uncertain. On Saturday, the 11-6 Chargers will play the Houston Texans in the AFC Wild Card Round.
Edwards, known as "Gus Bus," highlighted Dobbins' athleticism. He ran for 365 yards and four touchdowns this season but excelled in 2023 with the Ravens.
In a career season, Edwards rushed for 810 yards and 13 touchdowns for Chargers coach Jim Harbuagh's brother John. Elliot, who ranks second in active rushing touchdowns, may back up Dobbins if Edwards misses time.
Zeke feels grateful and enthused about the possibilities even though nothing is imminent. He's still a good football player and will always be a Cowboy."
Elliott was picked fourth overall by the Cowboys in 2016. He was named 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year in an All-Pro season.
The Chargers defeated the dismal Las Vegas Raiders 34-20 to complete their season. Harbaugh praised Justin Herbert, the starting quarterback.
“I'm proud of the team's play, starting with the quarterback,” he remarked. I don't say unbelievable because I witness it daily. Some of his throws were handoffs. They were where you would hand off the ball on a rushing play. Incredible game by him.”
