Goodbye to passwords: Microsoft plans a move that will affect millions of users.

Hackers' frantic activity is changing technology giants' strategies. More frequent cyberattacks put users and employees at risk.

Microsoft is taking action because hackers have harmed many large companies. Redmond is convinced it must eliminate the password system, but it won't happen overnight. Users should use passkeys.

“At Microsoft, we block 7,000 attacks on passwords per second—almost double from a year ago,” the company blogged. Meanwhile, adversary-in-the-middle phishing attacks have increased 146% year over year.

Passkeys are the best solution to these widespread attacks.” Cryptographic keys that cannot be shared or memorized are less vulnerable to cyberattacks. User authentication is done using public and private keys without exposing sensitive data.

Microsoft will try to get millions to use Passkey. New authentication methods use fingerprints, PIN codes, and facial unlocking.

Passkeys eliminate forgotten passwords and one-time codes and reduce support calls, reducing customer service calls. Microsoft must convince millions of users to switch to new systems. These are their arguments:

Passkey authentication is three times faster than password authentication and eight times faster than password and multifactor authentication.

Passkeys sign in three times better than passwords (98% vs. 32%). Passkey registration is completed by 99% of users.
